Philosophy Imprisoned

Call for Papers: Edited Volume, Philosophy Imprisoned

Western philosophy has a long relationship with prisons, from Socrates awaiting execution in Plato’s Phaedo, to Boethius’ Consolation of Philosophy, to Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks. Today, one of the primary forms that this relationship takes is that of philosophy classes in prison. This volume seeks to explore what happens to prisons, the people held in them, the people who pass through them, and even philosophy itself through these encounters. We invite papers from people who have been involved in philosophically-oriented class in prisons. We are looking for papers that philosophically reflect on prison and incarceration, as well as papers on philosophy in prisons. We are particularly interested in papers that explore issues of social justice, oppression, resistance, activism, gender, sex, race, ethnicity, class, nationality, disability, animality, ecology, etc. We welcome work from all philosophical approaches and traditions (including, but not limited to, continental, analytic, pragmatist, radical, feminist, and post-colonial) as well as from incarcerated people who may not identify with a philosophical tradition, but who have encountered philosophy in prison. Thus, we ask people with access to this CFP to help us make it accessible to incarcerated people who might not otherwise see the call. We will be accepting abstracts of 500 words both via email and regular mail.

The deadline for abstract submissions is August 1.

Submissions can be emailed to: philosophyimprisoned@gmail.com
