Institute for the History of Philosophy: Fichte and Romantic Literature

Andrew J. Mitchell (Emory University) & Dalia Nassar (University of Sydney)
The Emory University Institute for the History of Philosophy (IHP) will host its ninth annual summer workshop on July 16–26, 2018, on the topic of Fichte and Romantic Literature.

IHP Summer Workshops are designed to bring together a group of faculty and post-doctoral scholars specializing in specific areas of the history of philosophy for seminars focused around a shared reading list. This year’s workshop will address the influence of Fichte’s philosophy upon the work of Karoline von Günderrode, Novalis, and Friedrich Schlegel. Along with readings by Fichte, we will examine these authors’ critical commentaries on Fichte, as well as literary works from each shaped by Fichtean themes and concerns.

The Institute is pleased to provide room, board, and travel expenses for all participants accepted into the workshop. Guests will be housed at the Marriott Courtyard Decatur hotel, in downtown Decatur, Georgia, a couple of miles from Emory’s campus. All hotel/campus transportation will be provided. Decatur is a vibrant town with several restaurants and bars, all within walking distance from the hotel. The hotel is also close to a MARTA stop, Atlanta’s public train service. Participants will thus have access to other parts of Atlanta, including the airport.

To apply, scholars are asked to send a cover letter addressing the relevance of the topic and the authors to their current and/or future scholarly work, and a CV to Professor Mitchell at andrew.j.mitchell@emory.edu.

The application deadline is April 16, 2018, with decisions announced April 30, 2018.
