Emory University Institute for the History of Philosophy Summer Workshop – Habituation and Human Development: Aristotle, Dewey, and Merleau-Ponty

The Emory University Institute for the History of Philosophy (IHP) will host its ninth annual summer workshop on June 4-15, 2017 on the topic of “Habituation and Human Development: Aristotle, Dewey, and Merleau-Ponty.”

IHP Summer Workshops are designed to bring together a group of faculty scholars specializing in specific areas of the history of philosophy for seminars focused around a shared reading list. Ten participants and the co-directors meet in the mornings and afternoons over the course of two four-day weeks for discussions based upon close readings. The workshop format eschews the delivery of conference-style papers in favor of open, group-based engagement. In so doing, the IHP seeks to foster conversations that will inform future scholarly work. The IHP’s past workshops have focused on the topics of Kant’s Political Thought; Aristotle and the Emotions; Renewing the Ancient Quarrel: Plato, Hegel, Adorno; and Pierce, James, and the Origins of Pragmatism.

This year’s workshop will consider the role habituation, along with language and artistic expression, plays in developing our capacities for political and ethical engagement with others. Readings will include selections from Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, Dewey’s Democracy and Education and Art as Experience, and Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception.

The Institute is pleased to provide room, board, and travel expenses for all participants accepted into the workshop. Participants will be housed in the Marriot Courtyard Decatur Hotel, located in downtown Decatur and about two miles from Emory’s campus. Decatur is a vibrant town with many restaurants and bars, all within walking distance of the hotel. The hotel is also close to a MARTA stop, Atlanta’s public train service. Participants will thus have access to other parts of Atlanta, including the airport. All transportation between the hotel and the Emory campus will be provided.

To apply, scholars should send a cover letter that addresses the relevance of the topic to their current and/or future scholarly work and a CV to Professor Bredlau at the address below (by electronic or physical mail). The application deadline is February 1, 2017 and decisions will be announced by February 22, 2017.
