Open Letter to SPEP Members and Supporters

Dear SPEP Members and Supporters,

As announced at the Business Meeting of our last annual SPEP conference in Washington D.C., the SPEP Executive Committee has investigated, in consultation with our accountant and non-profit attorney, the need for raising SPEP's annual dues and registration fees. The Executive Committee has realized that an increase in these fees are absolutely necessary to keep SPEP operational. The increase in dues will cover SPEP's current operating costs and will not aim to generate any sort of surplus income for the Society while the registration fee increase will cover the cost to SPEP (exclusive of any local host's contribution) of the annual conference. SPEP now has new accounting software that will make annual profit and loss statements much more transparent and easily accessible to our SPEP members. For this reason, we will be able to post the annual profit and loss statements on SPEP's website at the time of our annual meeting each fall.

The website (http://www.spep.org) now includes the following, which we urge you to consult for a more detailed understanding of SPEP's budget and financial needs:

The SPEP Executive Committee has also added a new designation to the category of Student and Emeritus Member - that of Underemployed Member. Underemployed members will be asked to pay the same rates for membership and registration as students and emeriti (please see the "Rationale" for more information).

The increase in dues and registration fees will begin in the 2010-2011 membership year. As announced in a previous email, The Philosophy Documentation Center will be handling all membership and conference registration services starting with the 2010-2011 membership year. Again, links from the SPEP site to the PDC site for such services will be up and running at the time of this transition to make it as seamless as possible for our members.

Many thanks for your continued support of SPEP.

Sincerely,
The SPEP Executive Committee

Middlesex Petition

John Protevi and Todd May have just created a petition for an academic boycott of Middlesex University until it reinstates the philosophy program there.

Here's the petition. http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/academic-boycott-of-middlesex-university.html
Please spread it as far and as widely as possible, both inside and outside philosophy.

For more detail, here's the website of those seeking reinstatement: http://savemdxphil.com/

SPEP Statement on Middlesex University
We note with grave concern the decision to terminate the philosophy programs at Middlesex University. The Middlesex philosophy program is a leading center of continental philosophy research, spearheaded by its renowned Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy [http://www.web.mdx.ac.uk/crmep/].

In the 2008 RAE (Research Assessment Exercise), Middlesex was rated first in philosophy among post-1992 universities in Britain, with 65% of its research activity judged "world-leading" or "internationally excellent."

The SPEP Executive Committee urges SPEP members to support their Middlesex colleagues by signing the online petition: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-middlesex-philosophy.html.
