Spindel Conference 2011 “Derrida and the Theologico-Political: From Sovereignty to the Death Penalty”
Under the direction of Kas Saghafi, the 30th Annual Spindel Conference will place on September 29-October 1, 2011. The topic is “Derrida and the Theologico-political: From Sovereignty to the Death Penalty.” Drawing on Derrida’s later seminars on “sovereignty” (published in 2008 and 2010) and “the pardon” (with a particular emphasis on the yet-to-be-published “death penalty” seminars), the speakers of the 30th Annual Spindel Conference will address Derrida’s analyses of “the theologico-political” in works of philosophy, political theory, religion, and literature.
Keynote speakers are Peggy Kamuf (University of Southern California) and Geoffrey Bennington (Emory University). Other speakers include Michael Naas (DePaul University), Kelly Oliver (Vanderbilt University), Elizabeth Rottenberg (DePaul University), Thomas Dutoit (Université Lille 3), Elissa Marder (Emory University), Matthias Fritsch (Concordia University), and Olivia Custer (Bard College).
