Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The Hurford Center for Arts and Humanities of Haverford College invites applications for a two-year Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship to begin Fall 2012 (http://www.haverford.edu/HHC/mellon_post-doctoral_program/index.php ).  We seek scholars whose work focuses on affective experience within a cultural and political framework, in a theoretically textured fashion. Area of specialization might include literature, performance studies, cultural studies, history, music, film studies, media studies, history of art, sociology, philosophy, political science, psychology, anthropology,and religion.

In the first year the Fellow will participate in a seminar entitled “The Affective Turn” (http://www.haverford.edu/HHC/for_faculty/seminars.php#Future) led by Gustavus Stadler, English.  During each of the four semesters at Haverford College, Fellow will teach one course — intermediate or advanced.  Applicants should submit two brief proposals, one for a broad-based introductory course, the other for an advanced course. In the second year, the Fellow will organize and present a symposium funded by the Center.

Candidates who have received the Ph.D. in 2007 at the earliest, or who have completed the requirements for the Ph.D. by the application deadline of January 31, 2012 are eligible.  Submit  letter of application, curriculum vitae, two course proposals and a writing sample of no more than 25 pages, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent to:

University of Memphis: Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Memphis is pleased to announce the establishment of a Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship to begin Fall 2012 (semester system). This is a one year appointment with renewal contingent on performance and departmental needs. Salary competitive. The successful candidate will pursue research, teach one course per semester, and exhibit a commitment to the department’s mission of providing an inclusive environment in which to study philosophy. The department is especially interested in candidates who will contribute to research and teaching in areas of philosophy that are typically underrepresented in the canon. This includes, but is not restricted to, African American Philosophy, Latino Philosophy, Asian Philosophy, and Critical Race Theory. PhD Fellowship in German Literature, Literary Theory and the Philosophy of Literature

Why Kafka? On the Concepts of ‘Singularity’ and ‘Universality’ in the Philosophical Reception of his Work

The project will explore the ways in which the literary dimension of Kafka’s work relates the singular and the universal. The research project will pursue this goal through an analysis of key 20th-century philosophical works that have interrogated Kafka’s work.

Job description:

The main task of this fellowship consists of conducting research that will result in the writing of a doctoral dissertation within the framework described above. Occasional participation in the organization of research activities within the context of the project or within the Departments of Literature as well as Philosophy.

Profile and requirements:

  • MA in Literary Studies and/or Philosophy
  • Excellent study results and writing skills
  • Interest and enthusiasm for research in literature, literary theory, and philosophy
  • Independent spirit and research abilities
  • Good knowledge of German, English, and French

We offer:

A four-year doctoral fellowship starting on 1 October 2011, contingent upon a positive evaluation after two years.
